5 Health Benefits From Drinking Kombucha

#kombucha #health #missyslittlethingsinlife

If you follow my Facebook page or my Instagram page then you know that several months ago I discovered a beverage called Kombucha. Y'all are probably wondering, "What is the world is Kombucha!?!" and that is a very good question.

What is Kombucha?

(So I know y'all are here to read about the "Health Benefits". If you already know all about kombucha, just scroll on past this part.)

Kombucha is a fermented beverage made from sweetened tea. The word Kombucha comes from the name of a Korean healer, Kombu and the Japanese word for tea, "cha", hence Kombucha.  There are several stories of how Kombucha came about, but one of the most popular stories is that around 415 AD the healer Kombu was tending to the Japanese Emperor Ingyo, who was suffering from an illness at the time. Kombu gave the Emperor some of his grandmother's 'brew' (Don't you just love the term "Grandmother's Brew"? I don't know if it is true or not, but I like the story!) known to be a sort of "cure all". It is said that the beverage cured whatever was ailing Ingyo and from that time on he drank a glass every day of his life and was never sick.  It must have worked, because he ruled for almost 40 years and lived to the ripe old age of 76-77 years old.

The fermented tea gained popularity, spreading westward throughout Asia, Russia then to Western Europe. In the 1970's it became very popular in the United States and has recently become all the "rage" once again. Stores are devoting whole coolers to sale of kombucha. All kinds, brands and flavors.
Store Cooler Full of Kombucha
At $2.50-$5.00 per 16 oz bottle, those of us who drink it daily for the health benefits are learning to brew this beverage at home. You can make it for about 0.20 cents per 16 oz bottle. Less if you make it plain. For those whose whole families drink a serving everyday, this is the way to go. It is an acquired taste. If you drink apple cider vinegar everyday, you will love kombucha!

As with most fermented foods and beverages, there is an alcohol content. Now before you get your "panties in a wad" or get all excited thinking this is booze... (If the latter is your motivation you will be disappointed, because it is not like that.) The alcohol content is 0.5-1.0 percent. What you buy in the store is tested and regulated. Keep in mind, a minor child should be able to go into a store and purchase a bottle, go out into the parking lot and drink it. If they are squirrely afterward, it might have more to do with the caffeine and sugar. Some people lack the histamine for processing the tad bit of alcohol that kombucha contains, but that sensation only lasts for a few minutes and might have more to do with the sugar/caffeine rush if you drink it too fast, like drinking strong sweet tea.

Like apple cider vinegar, it is an acquired taste. My husband claims that is is the nastiest stuff he has ever put in his mouth. And in his defense, that was my fought. I had bought a brand that I had not tried before and was sharing it with him, it was nasty. Flavors do tend to be inconsistent as in strength, sweetness, carbonation, etc. even within brand families.

Kombucha has a tangy, slightly sweet, slightly sour (some less, some more) tasting carbonated beverage that is sparkly. (Watch out! If it is very sparkly, it might have some additives. Be sure to read your labels!) If fruit has been added to it, it will be fruity as well. A SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria & yeast) is added to the sweetened tea. This is a living organism that is often call the "mother", a "mushroom" or "Japanese mushroom". It is a perfect balance of bacteria and yeast that makes kombucha so healthy. The yeast in the SCOBY feeds on the sugar that is in the tea. Beneficial bacteria continues to grow as well. A byproduct of the yeast is co₂ and how kombucha gets it's natural carbonation.

My SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast)
The above SCOBY I developed myself. It adds on a layer or two every brewing. They can be separated and shared with friends or be used in your compost, eat or even feed to your pets.

I have videoed a series of kombucha how-tos that I plan on posting along with a blog post over the next few weeks. Be sure to subscribe so that you will not miss them!

Now onto:

5 Health Benefits From Drinking Kombucha

Drinking 4-8 oz of Kombucha a day has so many health benefits. There have been many claims of kombucha being a miracle "cure all" from ailments such as the common cold to HIV to cancer! After you read the benefits that I have listed below, you will see why some of these claims make sense.

It has replaced my afternoon "coffee" or "sweet iced tea" break. After drinking a serving you will feel refreshed, energetic and at the same time, relaxed. You will feel recharged and ready to face the rest of the day.

Everything I am sharing with you is from personal experience.
Disclaimer: The below information is not intended to be medical advise. Take what you can use, discard the rest. If you have serious health issues, be sure to consult a professional.

1. Gut Health

Kombucha, having the perfect balance of beneficial bacteria and yeast, is packed full of probiotics. When you first start drinking it, you may have a tad bit of digestive distress, (I didn't, but some do) After a few days to a week, everything will be... consistent. Indigestion will disappear, and without going into too much detail, everything becomes consistent.
I would not recommend it if you have any type of digestive bleeding or ulcers. Kombucha is acidic (starts out acidic and converts to acaline after you drink it) and you will need to discuss/consult a professional, with kombucha experience, before trying it. My husband has GERD and it did not bother him the one time that he drank it. The research that I have done concerning drinking kombucha if you have digestive issues such as GERD or diverticulitis, etc., is all over the page such as, it will either cure you or kill you. If you have a problem, find a homeopath, doctor, nurse practitioner, a professional of some sort who does have experience with patients who have the same issues and it was cleared up with kombucha.

2. Boosted Immune System

People who drink 4-8 ounces of kombucha everyday seem to never get sick. This may be where cure for the common cold to HIV come in to play. Those who have been drinking kombucha regularly for some time have beneficial bacteria (for a lack of a better word) infused in their bodies. When a microbe with mischief intent enters the body, that beneficial bacteria will attack it and destroy it before the microbe has time to incubate and make you sick. My only personal experience with this is a few weeks ago, when school started back (that is when germs are just everywhere!) the glands in my neck swelled up and became sore. My throat was a tad swollen and inflamed. I knew I was coming down with a doozer of a respiratory infection. Then it was all gone. My body just shut down whatever was about to make me sick. You know what? I will take it!  I hate summer colds. I am in the deep south and it is hot! There is nothing worse than a bad cold in hot weather.

3. Lowers Cholesterol/Lowers Blood Pressure/Natural Diuretic

I really could not decide to actually label this particular benefit. You see, years ago I started retaining fluid. My cholesterol was fine. I ate right, exercised and have always had a low sodium diet. 9 years ago I started retaining fluid, bloating as in swollen hands/fingers, feet/toes. I also gained a few pounds. Fluid retention does that. I could still wear my clothes so I did not worry about it too much. Then 8 years ago I had a very mild heart attack. 5 months later I was diagnosed with an aortic dissection. My blood pressure was very high and I have been on meds for it ever since. I am still on a very low sodium diet. I have also been on diuretics... until I started drinking kombucha. Since drinking kombucha my blood pressure has lowered, my body stays flushed and my cholesterol has lowered, though it has never been high. The added benefit is, I am not getting leg cramps. Diuretics would give me severe leg cramps (yes, I drink plenty of fluids, eat a balanced diet and take supplements. I could exercise more....) along with restless legs. When I started drinking kombucha, all of that is stopped. I still have to drink plenty of water.
If you dehydrate easily and start drinking kombucha, you will need to increase your fluid intake as well.
Keep in mind, if you retain fluids then your blood pressure will rise. As you eliminate unnecessary fluids from your body, your blood pressure will lower. This is one of the great benefits of drinking kombucha and it is sodium free!

4. Kombucha is Packed with Enzymes, Vitamins and Minerals

Kombucha is becoming a very popular post workout drink. It is full of vitamin B's, enzymes, electrolytes & minerals that get depleted while working out and without all the sugar & salt that is in your sport drinks. It will also raise your body's alkaline/ph level which is where I believe many claim that is will cure cancer. I have not heard any stories or know anyone who has actually been cured of cancer by drinking kombucha, but I do know that cancer does not thrive in an alkaline body and I know many people who are controlling their remission by keeping their bodies in a high alkaline/ph state with a great deal of success. If you are or have suffered with cancer, I am so sorry that you are having to go through this journey. Get with a professional who has experience with patients drinking kombucha and those patients going into remission. I would not recommend drinking kombucha if your body is compromised in any way except under the supervision of a professional.

5. Detox

This is the last one I am going to tell you about and it is probably the very best! Kombucha will detox and I daresay, help repair liver damage. In 2005 my gallbladder was removed. It was pretty sick. I did not know about "cleanses", etc. at the time. I also did not know that the crud that makes your gallbladder sick backs up into your liver. At least in some people it does and I am one of "those people". Anyway, my liver numbers have not been good since. And I don't drink.
Your liver filters everything that goes into your body. Whether you eat, drink, breath or absorbed topically through the skin. And don't forget, all medications, whether prescriptions, over the counter, etc. Everything goes through your liver. This can be metals, toxins- environmental-topical, inhaled or ingested. Excess fat also gets stored in your liver. When you eat a lot of sweets & starches, well what the body does not use for energy your body converts to fat and it gets stored in your liver.  If your gallbladder has been removed, bile can back up into your liver and solidify.  Kombucha detoxes and gently cleans your liver, slowly and gently. Breaking down what has built up, but should not be there and gently passing them on out naturally. This will allow your liver to begin to function optimally!
My last blood workup was only 3 months after I started drinking kombucha. The liver numbers had dropped, a lot! Still over normal, but only a tad. I expect by now they are normal. 😊 And that is something to get excited about! A healthy liver makes everything else in your body function more smoothly.

Other Health Benefits Of Kombucha

I have heard and read about, but really have no experience with:
Anti-inflammatory
Takes away the symptoms of arthritis
Cures cardiovascular disease
Helps with weight loss
Clears skin
And I am sure if given time for further research, we can all find more!

What are your experiences with Kombucha? Be sure to post in the comments down below.

Kombucha. One of those "little things in life".

My Gray Journey Continues ~ Change in My Colorwheel

Hello my friends! Hi Friends! It has been a while since I last uploaded a video. I will not be so long with the next one coming. If you have been following my channel you know that I have been transitioning my hair from coloring to going naturally gray. One thing I have discovered is a change in my color wheel.
Some of these colors no longer look good with my skin tone and silver hair

I know that many many years ago, it was quite popular to have a "color analysis". This is where a consultant, may be someone selling makeup, your hairdresser or your favorite clothing sales person, analysed your skin tones with your eye color and your hair color, determining what colors look best on you. I remember being labeled a "Summer" meaning light pastels in cool tones looked best on me. I could also get away with wearing the "Winter" colors, being the cool toned jewel colors and blacks.

Most warm toned colors, as you see here in the photo below of me wearing a camel colored sweater:

I look even worse in this orange shirt you see me in below:

Folks, you do not want to see me in yellow. It just makes me look totally jaundice.

Because of my eyes being a slightly blue/green and my hair being dyed blond or auburn (over the past 40 years, my hair has been almost every color of the rainbow!) I have been able to get away with wearing olive green. Of course, it might be that I love the color so much.

It looks good with the white top underneath, next to my face, but see how good it looks with the merlot colored top! Really pops! Once all of the color is out of my hair (you can see just a tad of light brown/blond from the earlobes down, and it seems to be blending in nicely) I believe that these colors will still look good.

I always seem to be safe in white. This is a neutral color that I wear the most.
Blue is always a safe bet...

 Whether a print or....

 a solid.

Pinks, peaches, purples are also very good and do not clash with my hair.

If you are transitioning, you will probably find your color wheel changing as well. Some colors will not be quite as forgiving as others. There may even be some differences between some shades in the same color family.

If you are also transitioning from coloring your hair to natural, you may also find your color wheel changing as well.

Transitioning To Natural Gray Hair & Rocking It!

Many of you have been following me on my "gray journey". I am happy to say that I am one step closer!!! This past week my hairstylist gave me an awesome haircut that is perfect for this transition. The cut blends the color and the gray that has grown out, wonderfully. I could not be more pleased!
As you can seen in the photo below, a lot of my hair was cut off...

When you get to this stage, it is a good idea to have several photos saved from pinterest, blogs, etc. Also talk to your stylist. He/she knows your hair, what will work and be able to advise you on what the best cut will be for the look that you are going for. I had whole board full on Pinterest that I was able to access and show that included several style options for now and what I was going for 1-2 years down the road.

And then we got started!

Or at least, Brooke, my hairstylist got started. I mainly just sat there.

I never realized how silver or white my hair had actually gotten. I have been coloring it for so long.

My new style is so smart looking and looks like it is going to be very easy to care for and fix myself. (You know how hard that can sometimes be!) I do love it and will probably keep it until all of the color is grown and cut out.

I just love how the back looks!

Now if I were to be able to start all over again, there are 3 things that I would do differently.

Three Things That I Would Do Differently:

  1. I would not color just the roots around my part every 2-4 weeks. In 2-4 months it really just gives a bad "comb-over" effect.
  2.  At the very start of the transitioning stage I would have the color in my hair totally bleached/lifted out.
  3. After having the color totally bleached/lifted out, I then would have have it tinted silver (either using a semi or demi tint/color) and maybe some lowlights added.
The above suggestions will make the transitioning almost seamless. There are many YouTube videos that show you the DIY, but honestly, it might be better to have your hairstylist do the color lifting and tinting for you. They know more about how to mix and apply the chemicals to get the results that you are looking for.

Are you transitioning? Thinking about transitioning? Comment below and tell us about it.

Hugs,
Missy

What's For Breakfast?

or Brunch or Dinner or even a snack.

Frittatas of course!

A dish packed full of protein, minerals and omega 3s. What is even better, you can make it your own! My family loves this dish. Great for a healthy breakfast, serve with brunch and also great for on the go and a great post workout meal. Stores well in the fridge and reheats well. Only 20 seconds in the microwave and it is ready to eat.

It is resembles a crustless quiche. My husband's cousin calls it an "egg pie" and basically, that is exactly what it is.  Another great thing about frittatas is you can use up those fresh ingredients that have been sitting in your fridge. You know, the greens that are starting to wilt. I will even freeze these veggies and use them to make frittatas at a later time. They will still work great and be delicious!

Official Wikipedia Definition: Frittata is an egg-based Italian dish similar to an omelette or crustless quiche or scrambled eggs, enriched with additional ingredients such as meatscheeses or vegetables. The word frittata is Italian and roughly translates to "fried".

Main Ingredients For A Frittata

Eggs, cheese, greek yogurt, spices, a few of your favorite vegetables and some cooking oil. You can also add meat, whatever you like. I do try to keep ours on the healthy side as much as I can.

And you will need a large cast iron skillet. Your frittata can be cooked in muffin pans, but I have never done that.

Basic Recipe:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees fahrenheit.
8 Large Eggs
1 Cup of Fat Free Greek Yogurt
1 Cup of Cheese (I used goat cheese here, makes it very creamy) shredded or crumbled
1 Tablespoon of Basil
2 Cloves of Garlic
Salt & Pepper to taste
Cooking Oil (I use Avocado Oil, wonderful flavor and works well in an iron skillet)

Additional Items:
1 Cup Asparagus, Washed & Cut (you can also use whatever greens that you have on hand. I love this with spinach, my daughter loves it with broccoli)
1 Pint of Mushrooms, Sliced
1 Cup of Tomatoes, Sliced, Halved or Chopped
Parmesan or Romano Cheese, finely grated
You can also add various meats or other vegetables that you and your family like.

You can find a printable copy of the recipe by clicking here.

Start with your eggs. Crack them into a mixing
bowl and lightly whisk.

Add your one cup of greek yogurt and blend with whisk until smooth as you see in the photo below.
Seasonings: Basil and Salt & Pep to taste

Next add your seasonings, lightly whisk until blended. Now you are ready to start cooking!

Heat up 1-2 tablespoons of avocado oil (or whatever oil you have on hand) in your iron skillet on medium high. Grate your 2 cloves of garlic and allow to lightly brown. Add your beaten egg mixture to the skillet. (NOTE: you may need to turn the heat down a tad.)

At this point it is so easy, almost like scrambling eggs. Add your other ingredients like cheese, veggies and any meat you might want to add. (Save the tomatoes for last.)

Stir the other ingredients into the egg mixture and keep stirring, lightly, mainly to keep the whole mixture from getting solid in places. Check to make sure your heat is not too high or too low. This is very similar to scrambling up a large vat of eggs.

When the mixture is just a tad less than 1/2 cooked, take the skillet off the heat and add your tomatoes.

Then top with your finely grated parmesan or romano cheese.

Place in preheated oven and allow to finish cooking. It will take about 20-30 minutes. When it is ready it will be puffy and golden brown.

Allow to cool for about 15 minutes then slice just like you would a pie. Makes about 6-8 servings.

Garnish with greens, serve with a salad or fruit or both.

You can even eat it by itself. Delicious any want you want to serve it.

So Good!!! And one of those little things in life.

Tell me what ingredients you like to include in your Frittatas?

Enjoy!

Evangelist to the World - The Reverend Billy Graham

Thy Good and Faithful Servent

This morning I got up, as I usually do, check the news to learn that Billy Graham has gone "home". I can just imagine Jesus standing there at the gates of heaven with arms open wide saying, "Welcome home, thy good and faithful servant, welcome home and come into thy rest."  In time others, who have "gone home", are going to come up to Graham and say, "Thank you for giving to the Lord, for I am a life that was changed..." If ever these words would apply to a servant of God, they would apply to the Reverend Billy Graham. With every breath, he proclaimed the Lord Jesus Christ and the salvation that He  (Christ) provides to sinners, just like you and me.

The Evangelistic Crusader

My first memory of Billy Graham was watching him on TV as his Evangelistic Crusades were being televised. As a family, we always watched Billy Graham when he was on TV. During his ministry he did about 417 crusades on 6 different continents.
Seems like the crusade I attended was in a tent like the one above. The sides were rolled up.

Typical stadium set up for a Billy Graham Crusade
Almost every people group and tongue has heard the gospel through Graham's ministry.  I even had the privilege of going to one of his crusades when I was a youth. I cannot recall the details, as I was young. Maybe in Jr High or slightly younger. I do remember it being a really big deal. Our church sent volunteers to sing in the choir, to usher, be part of a prayer circle and to be counselors during the altar call. In all of my life, I had never seen so many people in one place at one time.

(Left) A Program That My Husband has saved from attending a Billy Graham Crusade in 1972.

Billy Graham spoke with passion and conviction. I believe that it was J. Vernon McGee who said that when he first saw Billy Graham he was not that impressed. Dr. McGee wondered what in the world could God do with a tall, lanky, skinny rag tag looking of a young man with such a tuft of hair wearing a suit that was too big and didn't fit well. But when he heard Billy Graham preach, fire came from his eyes and the Holy Spirit from his lips. Dr. McGee knew that God had His hand on this young man.

As Rev. Graham would bring his sermon to a close and do an altar call the congregation and choir would begin to softly sing "Just As I Am". Then he would always step back from the podium and pray.

Thousands would get up from their seats and head to the altar in response to whatever God had put on their hearts. It could have been to rededicate their lives to the God because they have been out of fellowship from being out of fellowship with Him or to accept Jesus Christ as Savior for the first time.

Many many lives were reached because of what vision, passion and evangelistic gifts that God placed in this man. And he heeded the call. That means Graham did with his life what God wanted. And he did not get rich off of it.

The Life of Billy Graham

Billy Graham was born November 7th, 1918 and passed from this earthly life February 21st, 2018. Just 8 & 1/2 months shy of his 100th birthday. Accepted Christ as Savior at age 16. Was married to his bride, Ruth Bell Graham, for 64 years. She passed in 2007. They had 5 children. She was a partner in his ministry in every way. A wife, mother & home manager. Because of his schedule, they would go months without seeing each other. But she knew this was all a part of God's plan for them. One of the funniest things I have ever heard her say in an interview was in response to the question if she had ever considered divorce. "Divorce? No, never. Not an option. Now murder....." Meaning that their marriage was not without their trials, but God was at the center and head of their marriage.

Ruth & Billy in their younger years

Rulers would seek Graham out for probably photo opps, but also seeking his counsel. Queen Elizabeth II considered him a friend. Always invited him to visit when he was in GB and wanted him to preach at their family services which he obliged. He spoke with "clarity & certainty". They had an unlikely friendship as Graham quoted in his autobiography,
“No one in Britain has been more cordial toward us than Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II...”

Living Humbly & Modestly

The Grahams did not have extravagant lifestyles. The monies collected went back into the ministry. One morning I was watching one of the network news programs. This was in the early 80's when there were a lot of scandals, financial & otherwise, being uncovered in the world of televangelists and the Judeo-Christian ministries.  A, at the time, well known televangelist couple and Billy Graham were guests being interviewed by the show hosts concerning the different financial scandals happening in the different ministries. And how televangelists are always making a plea for money & donations. When asked about the finances and monies coming into the Billy Graham Crusades, Billy Graham's response was that they have never had to ask for money. They pass the plates at every crusade and the offerings are used to support the ministries. "God has always provided what we need. The day we have to ask for money will be the day that we will know God is no longer in our ministry and it will be time to quit." Billy Graham was adamant about financial accountability in the ministry. BTW, the televangelist couple who appeared with him were later accused, charged and convicted of fraud with their ministries.

Legacy

I daresay that no one has done more to lead others to Christ than the Reverend Billy Graham. I expect over 1,000,000, because this man answered God's call and used the special gifts that God gave him. Amazing what God can do with one person, if that person will surrender to the call.
"Thy good and faithful servant."

John 3:16, the first Bible verse I memorized, after watching a Billy Graham Crusade on TV.
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life."
That, beloved, is my prayer for you.

What are your memories of Billy Graham? Has his ministry affected your life or the life of a loved one in anyway? I heard the gospel of Jesus Christ many times before I accepted Him as my Savior. Several of those times were sitting in front of an old black & white TV with my family watching and listening to Billy Graham deliver the gospel, "with clarity and certainty."
