Yard Sale and Thrift Store Finds

I am participating in Kelli's of There's No Place Like Home Friday Show and Tell. {Click on this link to read more about it.}
Show and Tell

Last Saturday, I met up with Rhoda of Southern Hospitality and we went yard selling. Man she is GREAT to go with. She does not dilly dally or dig through junk that is out there b/c no one wants it. She is like me. Walks around it, sniffs around, gets back to the car and moves on. My kinda woman. And she knows stuff!

She may not have found anything, but I did find a few things. :D One is my pearl. I did pay about $10 too much considering there is no foot petal, plug or accessories outside of a couple of bobbins.
This is a ~1927~ era Singer Sewing Machine. One of the first table top electrics. It is the daddy to the Featherweight. I bought strictly for a decorative piece. It's daddy looks just like it, but is a hand crank. If I had seen that, I would have passed out on that man's driveway. Then I would have had to pay asking price or walk away empty handed.

Needless to say, I was thrilled with my find. The hardest thing was to not look too excited. Then they know they have you. Rhoda is a good coach. She did not know anything about vintage sewing machines, but she did help me come up with a good dickering price. And not look too excited. :D I was so happy with my find!!!!

I also found a couple of pashminas (new still in packages) and a couple of plant stands for bargains while we were out. The pashminas will be handy for winter scarves and one I plan to use as a should wrap with a black dress for a dinner I will be going to next month. Plant stands are great! (Rhoda, I hope your car did not hatch a bunch of spiders!) As soon as these hurricanes and all this humidity passes, I plan on painting them.

Now on to Thrift Store Finds.... I have discovered a little thrift store that takes donations and profits (after expenses are paid) are donated to several ministries about town. Two of their ministries are dear and near to my heart. So, I plan on sending most of my future discards to them and shopping them every chance I get.

I found this nice willow basket. It will be saved for a perch and potty for Zoey. Zoey is 'perched' trained. She will not go in her cage, and rarely on a person. We have to keep a perch (willow basket) next to her cage (or where ever she is) for her to climb onto to potty.... Occassionaly she chews them and tears them up, so... If I can find one for $4.25 cents, I get it! :-)

BTW, we usually put a layer of rocks in the bottom of the basket and line it with news paper. We change out the news paper frequently.

I do have a weakness for nice linens. This is a table topper. It is a fine hankerchief linen with machine embroidery and hemstitching. The crochet lace is all by hand. Very nice and mint condition. It was $4. I need to wash and iron it.... ;-)

Those were my finds! And my Friday Show and Tell. Make sure you go by Kelli's to see other Show and Tells for this week as well!

I hope y'all have a blessed day!

Thrift store finds!!!

I went Thrifting last week. I even had to go to a fast food restaurant to sustain life! Yuck! I will have to plan better next time.

Here are my finds! I do not believe I spent a total of $20 bucks.
Some baskets, less than a dollar, 2 candle sticks $1.49. They will look nice on my dresser. Sliver plate platter. Pretty heavy. It is stamped. I think a brand Service Merchandise or someone like that carried. There is a little rust on it. If it does not clean up well, I bet it will spray paint well. ;-) And then it will never have to be polished! Several doilies.

A blue and white plate. 30% off of 2.75. There was a TJMaxx sticker on the bottom that was partially peeled off. I have a spot for it in my kitchen.

You can see a white flower pot holder in the back (it was once black, had been painted white, I just painted it black again! Show it to you later.)

I needed a plain old bread basket in my kitchen to serve bread in. This was .59 cents and it will do nicely. The doily I found at an antique shop next to a thrift store. It is hand made, not mass produced in a factory. Nice tight even stitches. $3. I snatched it up. Someone did not know what they were letting go, or did not know what they were doing. Grandma spent a lot of time on this one.

The rest of the doilies I found were factory produced like the ones you would find in Micheal's or Hobby Lobby. But I always find use for them. I love doilies.

For one of the smaller baskets, I plan to borrow an idea from Kelli's (No Place Like Home) of storing/displaying dish towels in on the counter. I tried to find the link to that post on Kelli's site, but could not. Her basket looks like an antique. I did not want to get too nice of one b/c I might spray paint one of them... I am going crazy with spray paint! Zoey better watch out! I will be spray painting her next!

Inspired to go Thrifting and Antiquing

Inspired by Rhoda's "What's Your Favorite Thrift Find" I was inspired to go to a couple of nearby places.

The first place I went was the Salvation Army.

If you look at this table and chair set, then go to Cindy's My Romantic Home and take a look at her Dining Room Table and chairs....

The caning needs replacing in places. But... made me think, "I wished I needed a Dinning Room Table and Chairs!" Oh well, someone will find this jewel and enjoy fixing it up and have a great time with it. :D

There was also a lovely sideboard in great condition.

Then I went to On a ShoeString Antiques in Bluff Park.
This is the store where I got the Compote and Silver Butter Dish.

There is a lot of Garden Art for sale in the front.

While the front rooms are filled with prime items like a Tiffany Lamp, dishes, collectibles, etc. The back is full of cool stuff that takes little imagination to use. You have to go through the place several times to take it all in. And don't forget the upstairs!
Here are several mantels stacked several deep. A sink... A barbers (or dentist) chair and an adding machine. Behind all those mantels are shelves with more dishes!

I am not sure what this is, but I thought is was neat and decided to take a photo.

There were many cabinets in the back. This one is "Vintage Shabby Chic" complete with contact paper on the door. I guess it was a 'cool' idea at the time. ;-)

Anyone need a nice chair?

Or maybe a Rocker?

Look at all the teacups.
They were in the bathroom.

And this little potty and chamber pot were in the bathroom too!

I was much interested in this little one. I have been looking for any antique hand crank child's sewing machine for a while. But it was a little pricey. Today, I will go to Smocking Arts Guild Meeting. Several of the gals have collected these. I will tell them the brand and ask what is a fair price. If it is good, I will go back and get it. :-P

Of course, I had to go into the caboose! (That is where I found my Silver Plate Butter Dish!)
Everything in the caboose is 1/2 off. There was a lot of silver plate in there. If you needed it, want it and have a place to put it.

Look what I found!!! A plate to match the Compote! (And other pieces that I have, mom gave me.) There are a couple of chips and a corner kinda broken. However, I call that character. :D

Price... $4.00!

If anyone in the Central Alabama area wants to know where or how to get to these items/places, email me or comment and I will email you where/directions.

Have a great day everyone!
